We left Sunday morning from New Orleans. The train took us across Lake Pontchartrain that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. We saw Herons, Egrets and Brown Pelicans. As we traveled through Mississippi and Alabama the train traveled through swamp land. Lots of Bald Cypress trees. Others were covered with the very pretty lavender Wisteria flower. Birmingham, the landscape became hilly and rocky.
Going through Alabama we passed the Anniston Army Depot. It is known as the “Tank Rebuild Center of the World”. We slept through South Carolina and it became light in Greensboro, North Carolina. This was the first time we encountered rain on the trip. We passed a field of about 20 vultures.
Going through D.C. we saw the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument. On Monday we were in New York City. Arriving in the evening. We spent Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, with Ian. On Wednesday we headed to Chicago and then home.
In Indiana and Ohio the ponds were frozen and snow still in the ditches. Quite a difference from the green grass and flowers blooming in the west. We passed several Maple trees with buckets. Someone collecting sap to make maple syrup. Just outside of Chicago we passed miles of Tall Grass Prairie. At 7pm we arrived at the final station and our very dirty car. I am so glad we took the trip but it is great to be back home.
